"'It's for your own good!' he says." He stomped angrily out of the vehicle, swinging his bag behind his shoulder, still grumbling. "Bah!" "You've been complaining for the whole ride already." Matt sighed, never taking his eyes off his video game console. He walked behind the angry Mello, his fingers pushing at the buttons at lightning speed. "Aren't you... you know, tired?" Near got out after Matt, quietly observing the toy robot in his hands. "Tired? I'm hardly finished! Don't you think it should be illegal to get kicked out of your own house?!" Matt sighed again. "And that's about the eleventh time you said that already... Ah, damn! I got shot!" He suddenly exclaimed, jerking his arm to the right, accidentally hitting Near's shoulder. Near gasped lightly from the sudden hit, his toy robot flying out of his hands and rolling away. "Ah! My robot..." "Shoot! I'm down to two life points!" Matt panicked, not noticing that Near was wandering away from them, chasing after his precious toy. Mello was already off front, stomping as he continued to bitch about Roger out loud. ▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄ The toy robot seemed to have developed a life of it's own, free from Near's grasp, rolling away mischievously from its white-haired owner. It rolled down a hill, towards the school's entrance gate that the cab Near, Mello and Matt had taken passed through earlier before. Finally, it seized it's rolling. Under someone's foot. ".... Hm? What's this?" The person who was stepping on Near's robot mumbled, blinking down curiously at it. She removed her foot from the toy carefully and bent over to pick it up. A few seconds later, Near finally caught up and stopped at the sight of the person holding his robot. He stared at her. She looked about his age and was about one or two inches taller than him. A student at this school? But she wasn't wearing the school's uniform. Instead, she had on a plain black shirt with a white cross and dark blue jeans. She was holding a backpack in her hand and his toy in another. "Can I have back my robot?" Near asked bluntly, sticking out his hand at the girl. She looked up from the robot and stared at him. Near could see that she had black eyes that was the same dark shade as her waist-long hair. Her mouth was a straight line and her eyes looked as if she was sleepy, or lost in thought. She stared back at him for awhile before placing the toy back into his hand. "Here." "Thank you." Near mumbled in a monotone, examining his toy for any damage. When he found none, he looked up at the girl again only to find her studying him. "I suppose you're welcome." she replied, almost with no emotion. Near merely nodded and didn't say anything more. The two stood there quietly, locked in a staring contest. "...." A gust of wind blew past eerily, ruffling through their hair and clothes. "I'm Near." Near decided to introduce randomly, breaking the silence, twirling a lock of his snow-coloured hair with his index finger and thumb. He continued to stare into the girl's eyes, returning her emotionless gaze. ".... I see." the girl said, finally breaking eye contact and putting on her backpack. "I should get going now. It's been nice meeting you. Interesting... I think. Well, til' we meet again, Near." She turned her back to leave Near, still fiddling with his hair. ".... bye." Near said, waving at her back. He glanced back down at his toy, pleased that he managed to get it back safely. Then, he looked back up, noticing the girl was already gone. Hmm, he never really got her name. He shrugged sheepishly, stuffed the toy robot into the pocket of his pants and went to climb back up the hill to search for Matt and Mello. ▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄ 15 minutes later... "OH MY GOD, WE LOST NEAR!" Matt screeched, his hands flying up to his head dramatically. He started to pace back and forth quickly, behind Mello who was busy talking to the lady at the registration counter. "This is bad, this is bad." The brunette's voice shook with pure panic, rubbing his chin in thought. He sucked in some air to calm down. It didn't work. "HE'S SO FRAIL AND SMALL! WHAT IF HE GOT RAN OVER BY A LORRY OR SOMETHING?! OR WHAT IF SOMEONE KIDNAPPED HIM?! OR WHAT IF HE FELL IN A HOLE SOMEWHERE AND CAN'T GET OUT?! ROGER'S GONNA CHOP OFF OUR ASSES! WHAT SHOULD WE DO! MELLO, WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!" "Oh, be quiet." Mello shot Matt half a glare and turned back to the counter to sign their registration papers. "I'm sure the little bastard will turn up eventually." "Name?" "Mello, Matt and Near." "Alright... And sign here, too." The middle-aged woman at the counter said sweetly, pointing at the paper. She fluttered her eyelids suggestively at Mello, who stared back at her with a disgusted expression. First, he got kicked out of the orphanage. Now he's being hit on by weird women with a mole on the side of their chins? Great. Just great. "How old did you say you were again, boy?" the woman asked in dazed voice. "... old enough to be enrolling in this school." Mello shot back, turning his head to the now seemingly asthmatic Matt. A disappointed look washed over the lady's face. "Would you stop it?" Mello told his friend in a snappy voice. "It's not like he's a total dumbass or anything. He'll show up sooner or later." Having said that, a sleepy white figure approaching them caught his eye. "See, he's right over there. I told you. Matt? Hey, Matt!" "What if Roger decides to blame us for his disappearance? What if we end up in jail for child abuse or something?! I'm serious, Mello, we have to do something!" Matt continued to freak out, his eyes behind his goggles, wide and frightened. "MATT!" Mello yelled sharply at him, forcing him to stop his trail of mindless panicking abruptly. "Have you been listening to a word I said?! The damned kid is right beside you!" Matt jerked his head to the side and indeed found his missing companion beside him, looking blank and slightly confused. "Oh." Matt blinked, realization slowly seeping in. He hurridly threw his arms around Near, almost suffocating him with his hug of death. "NEAR! I THOUGHT YOU FELL INTO A HOLE WHEN YOU GOT HIT BY A LORRY DRIVEN BY A KIDNAPPING CHILD ABUSER!" he cried, squeezing the confused boy tighter. "Where did you go?! Geez, if Roger finds out about this, God knows what he'll do!" Near tugged at Matt's arms until he finally released him. He breathed in air with a pained expression on his face. "Where did you wander off to?" Mello asked, glaring down at him, a scowl on his face. "You nearly gave Matt cardiac arrest, you know." "I was looking for my toy." Near replied casually, patting the toy robot hidden in his loose pants. "I dropped it, so I went to retrieve it." Mello rolled his eyes and Matt sighed, calming down fully. "Well... I suppose we should go check out our dorm now, huh?" Matt suggested, smiling weakly. Kicking up a fuss of the 15-minute disappearance of Near sure made him tired. "Yeah, sure, why not." Mello said dryly, crossing his arms. He turned to the woman at the counter, who seemed to have gotten over her painful rejection. "Hey, lady, can you direct us to the dorms?" "The dorms are over at that building over there." she gestured towards the right, to a tall, white, rectangular building. "Here. These are the keys." she continued flatly, dropping a silver key onto the desk. The key fell with a noisy clatter and Mello picked it up. He frowned slightly at her new cold tone and fought the urge to roll his eyes, in case she got even more offended. Women are such a hassle. They turned to leave, just when the women remembered something important. "Hey, wait!" she called out, bending over her desk. They stopped and turned to look at her. "I forgot to tell you..." she started off scractching her mole with a small, embarassed smile. "But... you will be sharing your apartment with one more person, since each dorm is originally designed to fit four people." "....." "WE HAVE TO WHAT!" Mello screamed in extreme disbelif. ".... what?" Matt asked absentmindedly, giving the woman a look. "Are you serious?" "Yeah..." The woman nodded, leafing through some papers. "the fourth person hasn't been decided yet, so I wouldn't know who he is. Well, it could be anyone, for that matter. Maybe someone older or younger." "There must be some mistake! How can we share a room with some complete stranger!" Mello protested, clearly angered by the thought. "Isn't that an invasion of privacy?!" "Look, honey," the woman sassed, her tone sounding rather bimbo-ish. She propped her chin up onto her palm. "There are over a thousand students enrolling in this school, and there are thousands more dying to get in. You should be happy just to even be here, much less complain. There's no helping it either. Besides, it's just one person. Surely you three are man enough to handle it?" "You heard the lady, Mello. There's no helping it." Matt said, giving a light pat to Mello's shoulder in feeble attempt to calm his friend down. His eyes were already back onto his PSP, shooting frantically at virtual monsters. "Let's just try to deal with it." ".... oh, whatever, fine." Mello finally gave up, strutting off in a storm, muttering profanities. "He's running off." Matt stated, still playing his game. He gave a gusture to Near to follow him. "Come on, Near, let's go after him. He's got the key." Near shurgged and obeyed, following the gamer as they chased after Mello. "..And don't get lost chasing after toys again, okay?" "I don't make any promises, Matt." "........" |
